Unfortunately, the couple’s Montecito mansion is a major money drain. They’re believed to have taken out multiple mortgages to pay for the $14 million home in 2020.
“They should have bought a $7 million house free and clear,” a source told Celebrity Intelligence newsletter. At the time they bought the home, reports claimed they put down $5 million, with the remaining $9.5 in a mortgage.
In addition, the couple’s extreme security demands are also draining their resources. An insider reported that their bodyguards cost $3 million a year. They have four security personnel at home and add another three when they travel.
In an effort to economize, the Sussexes have slashed their staff of 16 full-time employees to only five between their home and their Archewell business. The remaining staff includes a chief of staff, two TV execs, a UK press rep and a U.S. PR agency.
After losing their moneymaking deals with Netflix and Spotify, a source shared that Meghan “has a sense of how careful they need to be” with their money. But Harry, who was raised amid the royal family’s massive wealth “lacks basic awareness of what things cost.”
Meanwhile, the millions of dollars Harry received from his late mother Princess Diana, his grandmother Queen Elizabeth and his great grandmother are dwindling. With no reliable income on the horizon, the Sussexes are bracing themselves for a stark reality.
“Five years, roughly,” a source predicted. “That’s the window before their lifestyle looks a lot different.”

Speculation began swirling after flirty messages between Harry and Mail on Sunday journalist Charlotte Griffiths were revealed during his unlawful information gathering court case against the outlet’s publisher, Associated Newspapers Limited. Though the texts were from years before Harry and Meghan met, there were reports that Markle wasn’t happy about the renewed spotlight they would mean, and the reputational problem they presented.
Previous reports indicated the reveal of the messages was “embarrassing” for the couple, but especially for Markle, who was left “humiliated” and “blindsided” by their release. “Naturally, she’s wondering what else he may have hidden from her. Truth is paramount to Markle, so him being dishonest or at best evasive about his past is hitting her hard,” sources said.
But above all, sources say the problem is about trust. The couple has fostered a “‘us against the world’ mantra that’s defined their marriage,” and this “has given her cause to question that. It’s dramatically affected her level of trust.”
Reps for Harry and Meghan have denied there is any rift, but the questions remain. Particularly about their partnership. “Meghan is very much the boss in the relationship. She controls almost every aspect of Harry’s life both personally and professionally,” said a source. “And the way she’s bulldozing ahead with putting the kids on social media is a prime example of Meghan doing what she wants, whether Harry likes it or not.”
Reportedly, this is bringing back bad memories for Harry. “It’s triggering. As a kid, he hated it when he and [brother Prince William] were forced to pose for photographers during their private moments,” said the source. “The fact that his own kids are now being trotted out by Meghan in a similar fashion is not OK with him, but ultimately, what can he do? This [is] how Meghan controls him.”

He met with King Charles in September last year, and there were reports that the two were trying to find another date for a meeting—one that would involve Harry’s kids, who Charles hasn’t seen in years.

Harry, who has lived in the U.S. since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, did not meet with his father during the King’s now-concluded tour.
Donald Trump Allegedly Wanted Prince Harry Sent Back To Britain
Trump allegedly made his feelings about Prince Harry very clear during King Charles III’s recent state visit to the United States.
Charles and Queen Camilla arrived in America on April 27 for a rare royal visit, where they were warmly welcomed by Trump and took part in a series of official engagements.
However, during one moment tied to the visit, the president reportedly turned his attention to the King’s younger son, who has lived in the U.S. since stepping back from royal duties in 2020.
According to royal expert Richard Eden, Trump allegedly asked a British visitor, “Can you take him back?” in what appeared to be a pointed swipe at Harry’s continued presence in America.
It remains unclear who the British visitor was or whether Charles was within earshot of the remark. The King’s U.S. visit has since concluded, and he has continued with other royal engagements.
Trump Previously Criticized Harry Over His Ukraine Remarks
Trump’s alleged comment would not come as a complete surprise, as he has made no secret of his feelings toward Harry since the Duke of Sussex moved to the United States. Just days earlier, the president criticized Harry over remarks he made at an event in Ukraine in support of the country’s war effort against Russia.
The King’s second son had urged the U.S. to honor its treaty obligations to Ukraine after the country gave up its nuclear weapons following the Cold War.
Reacting to the remarks, Trump said, “I know one thing, Prince Harry is not speaking for the U.K., that’s for sure. I think I am speaking for the U.K. more than Prince Harry,” per CBS News.
Donald Trump Has Shelved Plans To Deport Harry
Ahead of Trump’s second presidential term, there was growing speculation over whether he would move to deport Prince Harry.
The chatter was fueled by questions surrounding Harry’s immigration status, with a think tank previously raising concerns over what the Duke may have disclosed when applying for his U.S. visa.
However, in February last year, Trump said he would not consider deporting Harry. In doing so, he also appeared to take a swipe at the Duke’s wife, Meghan Markle.
“I don’t want to do that,” Trump said when asked about deporting Harry, per the New York Post. “I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.”
The President Once Said Harry Is ‘Whipped’ By His Wife
Years earlier, Trump criticized Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in even harsher terms during an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan.
“Harry is whipped,” the president told Morgan. “I won’t use the full expression, but Harry is whipped like no person I think I’ve ever seen.”
“I’m not a fan of Meghan… and I wasn’t from the beginning,” Trump added of the former actress. “I think poor Harry is being led around by his nose.”
At the time, he also predicted that the couple would eventually divorce and suggested Harry might one day return to royal life “on his hands and knees.”
Donald Trump Is Delighted To Host Prince William
In contrast, Trump has spoken warmly about Harry’s older brother, Prince William, including once describing him as a “great young man” during the reopening ceremony of Notre-Dame Cathedral in December 2024.
That admiration for the heir to the throne is expected to be highlighted during a reported state visit planned for July this year.
Ahead of the potential visit, sources claimed Trump is especially pleased about the prospect of hosting William alongside his wife, Princess Catherine, whom First Lady Melania Trump is said to be particularly eager to meet.
“Melania wants Catherine, in particular, to come,” a source claimed. “She admires her greatly and would love her to visit.”
